Socializing

I started exploring MySpace by searching for my children in hopes of getting some scoop. I couldn't find them even though I know they had profiles at one time. Maybe they outgrew that phase...or maybe they are under alias names so their mother can't find them.

I preferred the socializing on Shelfari.com. where people discuss books. They are my people... and their photos are much more tasteful.

Wacky Wiki

It's the holiday season and I'm looking forward to some holiday cheer in the near future. This influenced my decision while exploring wikis for Exercise 7.

I decided to search for a wine wiki. I chose the first wiki listed on Google after the wikipedia listing. It is called wiki.winehq.org and has an inviting logo of a half-filled glass of wine (I'm an optimist).

Imagine my surprise when I read this introduction: "Wine enables Linux, Mac, BSD, and Solaris users to run Windows applications without a copy of Microsoft Windows. Wine is free software under constant development." Evidently I have a lot to learn about the tech world.

The Download on Downloading

I successfullly downloaded a Nancy Pearl NPR podcast and decided that I want a MP3 player so that I can listen to her show anytime and anywhere I want.

I also downloaded an ebook from CLEVNET which I can transfer to my new MP3 player when I get it. Then I will have too many books to listen to in addition to too many books to read.

RSS

I think I've cover all the bases with RSS feeds. I signed up for 2 news sites, 2 book sites, 2 TV network sites and 1 sports site. But I'm most excited about the Nordstrom's feed.

Greene County Public Library has an RSS feed that is updated daily. It's just a list of titles that have links to the items' catalog records. You can customize it by date or title. Hmmm. Maybe this should be considered for MCDL.

I'm working.....really

I created three radio stations in Pandora.com. They are Janis Joplin, The Temptations, and New Age. Is my age showing?

While listening to my New Age station I reviewed the Reader's Advisory sites. There is an incredible amount of information out there. I need to remember to take advantage of these sites and not reinvent the wheel.

While listening to my Janis Joplin and Temptation QuickMix, I used Hairmixer.com, an image generator to put wild, crazy hairstyles on Katie Holmes. She still looked beautiful in each one. Must be nice.

Rollyo

I "rolled" my own search engine for collection development. Yes, I finally got around to using 8N08 for professional needs.

I included in it Amazon.com and Alibris.com. I also added web sites for the audio vendors I use so that I can search both audio and print at the same time.

Drifting on Tag Clouds

I decided to use the tags on Amazon.com to look for a book about wines for a Father's Day gift for my husband.

I entered Italian wine which took me to Italian Wines 2008. I clicked on Italy in the tag cloud and found Italy for the Gourmet Traveler, which led me to click on Rome in that tag cloud. I couldn't resist the book A Civilized Shopper's Guide to Rome. That led me to clicking Paris in that tag cloud. I continued searching for a while.

When I found myself reading about the book Perfect Scoop which was about ice cream I realized I had wandered off my intended search.

I reigned myself in and began the wine book search again. This time I found a great book on contemporary Italian wines. Hmmm....if I buy the shopping and ice cream books also, I would be eligible for free shipping.
